ALS Is horrible, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the time we have and find some humor along the way
ALS (or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People with ALS lose their ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe. ALS is always fatal, usually within two to five years after diagnosis, though some people with the condition, like Stephen Hawking, survive longer. One in 300 people will receive an ALS diagnosis in their lifetime, more than 90% of whom have no family history of the disease. Despite millions spent on research, there is no cure and no effective treatment.
